As an independent research organization, the Morgridge Institute for Research explores uncharted scientific territory to discover tomorrow’s cures. In affiliation with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, we support researchers who take a fearless approach to advancing human health in emerging fields such as regenerative biology, metabolism, virology and medical engineering. Through public programming, we work to inspire scientific curiosity in everyday life.
The Morgridge Institute for Research seeks a proactive, plugged-in student with a passion for science communication, social media and content marketing. The Social Media & Communications Intern will help manage the Institute’s social media presence, including, but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram.
You will have the opportunity to report, write and edit news stories related to Morgridge’s scientific and outreach activities. In addition, you will serve on the promotional team of the highly successful Wisconsin Science Festival and use social media to gain statewide visibility. You’ll work under the direction of Multimedia Specialist Courtni Kopietz and the Morgridge communications and development teams.
The successful candidate must be committed to the Morgridge Institute’s mission of improving human health through biomedical research and inspiring society’s curiosity about science. Candidates will have an academic background in journalism, English, public relations, strategic communications or a related field.
You must have direct experience in managing a social media presence for a business, volunteer organization or student organization. Some experience writing for a print or online publication is also required.
The position requires the ability to work with limited supervision, a desire to win the Internet, and familiarity with AP style and the Microsoft Office Suite. Hands-on experience with the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) is desired, but not required.
The position will start in summer of 2019, but only applicants who are available to stay on through the fall and spring semesters will be considered.
The internship offers a flexible schedule (15-20 hours/week depending on workload and class schedule), an opportunity to gain great work experience and the ability to collaborate with staff of the Morgridge Institute and partners including the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation. Starting pay is $10 per hour.
