    The Opportunity

    The Morgridge Institute is hiring a long-term, part-time, Student Lab Assistant. The individual filling this position will provide laboratory support for the Cantor Lab within the Metabolism Theme.  We are seeking a student who can commit to 10-15 hours per week and has availability weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There may be opportunities for additional hours- typically during school recess.  Located in the Discovery Building, the Cantor Lab is situated in the heart of  the UW-Madison campus at 330 North Orchard Street and is easily accessible by bus.


    Responsibilities of the position encompass a variety of upkeep tasks including:


    • Maintenance of laboratory glassware and plastics (e.g. beakers, graduated cylinders)
      • Collect post-use from designated locations
      • Properly wash
      • Sterilize
      • Re-stock assigned storage cabinets
    • Maintenance of chemical stock area
      • Collect post-use weigh materials from designated location
      • Properly wash
      • Sterilize
      • Re-stock weigh area
    •  Assist in maintenance of tissue culture room
      • Re-stock disposable pipettes
      • Re-fill ethanol spray bottles
      • Ensure cleanliness of water baths


    • Maintenance of disposable glass pipette inventory (fill appropriate pipette cans, sterilize, stock)
    •  Sterilize bio-waste
    •  Assist with preparation of stock buffer solutions and reagents

    Student positions offer flexible schedules, an opportunity to gain valuable work experience, the potential to eventually assist lab personnel,  and the ability to network and collaborate with Morgridge staff.


    The Laboratory Assistant performs foundational support tasks, ensuring that the lab remains highly functional and productive. Successful laboratory assistants are self-starters who operate well  both autonomously and under supervision. They are excellent communicators and collaborators, able to efficiently and effectively execute a variety of important and time-sensitive tasks.  


    Candidates must be working toward an associate or bachelor’s degree. Ideal candidates will have succesfully completed a college chemistry course  and possess practical laboratory experience.
