    The Opportunity

    Job Purpose:

    The Associate Scientist will play a leading role in the development and operation of a campus metabolomics research center.  Major job duties include management of staff, overseeing the development of metabolite profiling methods, interacting with campus researchers seeking to utilize the facility, working on publications and grant applications, and aiding in the interpretation and reporting of research results.  This person will assume Primary Investigator status on grants.

      

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Work closely with the center’s Director in the promotion and development of this research center 
    • Interface with potential collaborators to explain the lab’s capabilities and assess the feasibility of proposed projects
    • Responsible for oversight of day-to-day center operations including management of center budgets and staff
    • Assist technicians in developing new applications, and complete method development for complex challenges
    • Mentor junior scientists and students on various projects
    • Review and approve data and reports generated by lab members
    • Assist the Director in the preparation of campus reports, scientific publications, and grant proposals   
    • Support the mission of the Morgridge Institute for Research by collaborating with scientists either at the Institute, at the University of Wisconsin, or in the global research community
    • Attend meetings at the Morgridge Institute for Research and other meetings as required
    • Travel to peer centers and scientific meetings on behalf of the center on occasion
    • Miscellaneous duties as required

    Qualifications

    Education and Experience:

    • PhD. in biological sciences or a related field in the area of analytical chemistry
    • At least 3 years of graduate experience with metabolism research
    • Previous experience in the areas of mass spectrometry and chromatography, including experience in small molecule analysis
    • Previous experience in project management

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

    • Demonstrated knowledge of biology and cell culture
    • Strong project management skills to include defining the scope, resources, milestones and success metrics.
    • Ability to pivot and reprioritized in a fast-paced environment
    • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skill; ability to manage expectations with external collaborator
    • Demonstrated ability to think creatively to solve problems
    • Strong ability to lead, mentor and train staff
    • Strong ability to exercise considerable discretion in the selection of research topics
    • Strong oral and written communication skills 
    • Ability to work with others in a focused laboratory setting
    • Instrument troubleshooting skills desired

     

    Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

    • Some travel may be necessary
    • Work is normally performed in a wet laboratory environment
    • No or very limited physical effort is required
    • No or very limited exposure to physical risk
