    The Opportunity

    Job Purpose

    The treasurer/controller is responsible for all treasury functions and manages the overall direction of the accounting and reporting operations for the Institute’s financial activities.  This person will also have oversight of federal and non-federal sponsored programs.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Maintain all aspects of the treasury operation activities, including liquidity, investments, analyzing daily transactions, and performing cash positioning and forecasting analyses.
    • Oversee all financial aspects of accounting, administration, and operations for the investment portfolio, including performance measurement and reporting, portfolio and cash reconciliations with the consultant and/or custodian, and tracking of fees and expenses.
    • Assure compliance with all accounting standards in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and maintain records, policies, and practices that are compliant with federal, state and local government laws and regulations.
    • Ensure that the Institute has an effective, efficient and documented system of internal controls to assure the accuracy and adequacy of reporting and to safeguard company assets.
    • Ensure all financial information is complete and accurate for timely internal and external financial reporting.
    • Effectively manage relationships with investment consultants and custodians, outside auditors and tax preparers on behalf of the Institute.
    • Maintain banking relationships. Evaluate new banking products and services including bank cost information. Implement treasury systems and train staff on those systems.
    • Maintain an efficient and cost-effective banking infrastructure and manage bank activity, including access, updates, opening/closing of accounts, transfers between accounts, and electronic payments.
    • Continually develop and streamline treasury operations policies, processes, and procedures focused on automation, effective cash management strategies and compliance.
    • Forecast cash flow positions ensuring sufficient funds are available to meet ongoing operational and capital investment requirements. Contribute to the organizational cash management strategy.
    • Implement and improve corporate credit card programs and expense reporting controls and analysis.
    • Liaison with the development team to create and maintain processes to track and record donations in a timely accurate manner. Prepare analysis of donor fund spending for purposes of donor stewardship.
    • Assist in preparation of presentations to executive management.
    • Develop and maintain appropriate metrics and tracking methods to identify best practices and process improvements. Identify opportunities to manage costs.
    • Train, supervise, and mentor direct reports by capitalizing on their strengths and delegating effectively. Provide staff with growth opportunities, professional training and the tools required to work effectively.
    • Complete other miscellaneous duties as required.

    Qualifications

    Education and Experience:

    • A bachelor’s of science degree from a four-year accredited university or college in finance or accounting is required. Master’s Degree/MBA preferred.
    • A minimum of ten to fifteen years previous experience in a treasury/cash management role
    • A minimum of seven years previous experience managing direct reports
    • CPA, CTP, CFA and/or FP&A certifications required
    • CPA firm experience preferred
    • Experience working in non-profits desired

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

    • Must have a working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and practices
    • Must have a working knowledge of derivatives, hedging, investments, and bank account management
    • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills
    • Excellent organizational skills to coordinate, request, control and analyze data from multiple sources
    • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel; ability to create sophisticated spreadsheets using advanced formulas. Proficient in creating and using pivot tables, v-lookup and other data analysis functions in Excel
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Proven track record of developing and mentoring talent
    • Team player mindset; willing to pitch in as needed in support of colleagues

     

    Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

    • Work is normally performed in a typical office environment
    • No or very limited physical effort is required
    • No or very limited exposure to physical risk
